Author's Note for Aldith

Aldith

Aldith is the first of the Damm Warriors. She is a natural leader and fighter. She inherited her lofty position, but holds it through ability. Aldith is strong, resolute, a defender of the supremacy of her warrior class, and as rigid as a stone wall. She is easily manipulated by her half sister, Rafyn, and despite her stellar military training, she is no match for the cunning and war-wise, Okakara.

The Damm Warrior martial culture is based on the Norman model and the adaptation from the Viking origin. One aspect is the custom of jus Primae Noctis, or the right of First Night, referred to as Fryst Nott in Gastown. It is debatable if this barbaric practice was real, or if it served as a literary vehicle for depicting the oppression of the peasants by a ruthless ruling class. I used it as the latter with a twist as Aldith selects Tana rather than Manoj. Most people think of Braveheart when confronted with First Night. However, it first appeared in the Charlton Heston movie, The War Lord. This was my inspiration.
