Jonas’s role was the self-appointed bellyacher, to voice the feelings of the other men, but always backing down before Patch, and never facing up towards Cotter. He was a sly little man, with never a kind word, twitchy fingers, and a sharp blade in his pocket which served him well. 

Jonas was not tall for a man. He was not a savage pugilist like some of the Bully Boys, or a dab hand with a blackjack or billy club. His particular poison was a dexterity with bladed instruments, and it was his method of choice for dispatching victims and carving malcontents.
