Her mother had bestowed the name Bella on her the first solar she entered the Var world, but she was widely known as Rafyn, on account of her lank black hair and curved, thick nose. At first, it was an affectionate sobriquet, but the meaning changed over time as her constant presence when corpses were in the vicinity distorted the meaning. Rafyn bore little resemblance to her half-sister, or the rest of the Var sisterhood. While they were fair faced and light haired as a race, Rafyn, shared her coloring with the night. Some whispered her mother had congress with the darker men of the north as she traveled across the frozen wastelands, or consorted with the spirits of the Old Ones. Either way, Rafyn was considered the result of an unholy union.
