No one had contemplated Agitha Freydasdottir rising to become Dux of the Var, or even surviving infanthood. She was always a sickly child, and though her regal mother was the epitome of what a Damm Warrior should be: tall, powerful, stern, and cruel, Agitha only inherited the latter attributes. In contrast to her statuesque younger half-sister, she had the body of a chubby bookkeeper, but she was the first born, and by the will of Frotha she was destined to rule. 

The Dux wore black every solar as a sign of mourning since the passing of her Dandy husband and her fourteen children. Her constitution was not strong, and though she ate sparingly, she always managed to put on extra weight at the end of each lunar. She hated her body, and her body hated her back.
